The Norwich Inn is home to Jasper Murdock Ales, one of the older Vermont breweries. Whether you’re a craft beer aficionado or just curious about the Brewery’s operations, you’ll find an ale that perfectly suits your palate. You’ll also discover a wide variety of rotating taps. Each beer has its own story, many of which were first brewed for special events.
Our Brew Master, Patrick Dakin, is proud to welcome you to the Brewery at the Norwich Inn, one of the top breweries in Vermont and the home of Jasper Murdock Ales, brewed right on-site.
President James Monroe dined at the Norwich Inn in 1817 while on a horseback tour of the New England frontier. Alas, history does not record whether he had a beer. But if he did, it was most likely brewed at the Inn. Vermont had no commercial breweries at the time, and the local beers were brewed in very small batches. Even the biggest copper kettle provided just enough ale for the brewer and his guests.
In 1993, this Vermont brewery tradition was revived at the Norwich Inn when Jasper Murdock’s Alehouse began producing traditional English-style ales in five-gallon glass jugs. By 1995, a historic livery building was renovated and outfitted with a new four-barrel brew house, which now produces 125-gallon batches. As one of the proud breweries in Vermont, we remain one of the smallest and coziest breweries in America.
Jasper Murdock’s repertoire has grown to more than 50 different craft beers. Our ales and lagers are crafted from the finest malts and hops, occasionally including hops grown in our own hop garden here at the Inn. Because filtration can strip flavor and body from a beer, the yeast is allowed to settle out naturally in an extended cold-aging period to ensure that all the goodness reaches your palate. The Vermont craft beer is then pumped underground and across the 100-foot distance from the Brewery cellar to the Inn’s Pub, where we rotate six different beers. We also offer guest taps, which will usually feature beers from other popular Vermont breweries.
Keeping with tradition and adding to the treat, our Vermont craft beers are sold only at the Inn. Bottled brew in many of our varieties is available by the 22-oz. bottle, by the case, or by 64-oz. growlers. Call ahead or just drop by the front desk to pick up your beer at the Inn. Our Vermont microbrewery also sells a signature ale cheese in collaboration with Woodstock’s Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company: Jasper Murdock Whistling Pig Ale Cheddar. It’s also available for sale at the Inn.
Session IPA. This IPA is made with just relaxing and thirst quenching in mind. Bitter enough to be refreshing without making a statement, it features Cascade, Comet and Amarillo hops. Plenty of bright grapefruit and citrus character with a bit of earthy balance.
A cream ale with a little hop kick. A crisp, ever so slightly sweet ale lightly dry hopped with Loral. The name of this hop is a mash up of Lemon and Floral, so you should be able to figure out what the hop character is like, You’re smart. I have faith in you.
This latest iteration of Dark Humour is a less heavy dark beer for the Summer Months. This dark lager sports a crisper finish, but still pushes mouthfeel and chocolate notes past the lips and over the tongue.
A classic Bavarian-style Märzen lager. German malts and hops along with a long lagering give this beer impeccable drinkability. The superb malt flavor is balanced by just a hint of hop bitterness.
This medium-bodied American-style IPA has an alluring golden glow and beautifully blends three strains of hops. While strong citrus notes ambush your taste buds halfway through the palate, the beer finishes very crisp and dry.
This lupulin-laden India Pale Ale is packed with juicy tropical fruit character, bright floral aromas, and delectable layers of hop flavor.
Inspired by an Irish Classic. Garnet red in color and full-bodied with a rounded malty flavor and lingering hop aftertaste. First brewed for the Whistling Pig Game Dinner held on Groundhog Day.
Frank Zappa: a unique, wild American icon. Zappa hops: a unique wild American hop first discovered growing all on its own in New Mexico. This IPA features Zappa and Strata hops, delivering a mix of tropical fruit and earthy dank yumminess.

This summer we were lucky enough to welcome Teodora from Bulgaria and Daniela from Romania to the Norwich Inn as part of our J-1 team.
They came in with fresh energy, big smiles, and a willingness to help wherever they were needed. And we definitely put that willingness to the test! From housekeeping to the kitchen to breakfast, Teodora and Daniela jumped in and became part of our team from day one.
We’re fortunate to have an amazing team here all year long, but during our busy season, having these two here to reinforce that team was a huge help. We truly couldn’t have done it without them.
Now, somehow, it’s already time to say goodbye. 😢
